Why Solvent Resistant Glitter?

Photo from Glitties.com

Are you looking for the next great nail art look? Have you seen all the fantastic glitter powder, glitter polish and matte glitter? Is it time to try something new in nail art? Solvent resistant glitter is a spectacular way to express one's creativity. Solvent Resistant Glitter can be used so many ways. Solvent resistant glitter comes in hexagon and there are a variety of colors to choose from. The main thing is to be creative and enjoy learning how nail art is an expression of ones style. The possibilities are numerous and the fun is just what happens when using glitter.

All of our Franken/Solvent Resistant Glitters have passed the MEK Test!

What is MEK?
Methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) is a strong colorless liquid solvent that has a sharp, sweet odor. Methyl ethyl ketone (also known as 2-butanone) is a man-made chemical that is also found in nature.  It is related to acetone and is used in dissolving paint, lacquer, varnishes and cleaning agent.
How Does Glitter Pass the MEK Test?
Photo from Glitties.com
Glitter is soaked in MEK for 5 minutes.  If the glitter does not bleed color or melt/dissolve any, this glitter would be considered solvent resistant.
Why Aren’t the Acrylic Polyester Glitters Solvent Resistant?
Acrylic Polyester Glitter is tiny perfectly cut colored plastic pieces, coated with an outside layer of polyester material.  The outside layer of these glitters is solvent resistant, but because the glitter is layered, the MEK or solvent is able to seep into the side of the glitter and dissolve the color and plastic core.  Just as though acetone dissolves acrylic nails.

If you haven’t already tried it, solvent resistant glitter is worth trying! Especially now that we have 18 new solvent resistant glitter colors available for spring :)

Jennifer Lawrence, The Real Actress

Photo found on Pinterest

It’s that time again… it’s Woman Crush Wednesday! As always we’ve been giving this week’s crush a lot of thought. But of course you’ll wonder why we had to put any thought into this one! She’s an absolute no brainer! You’ve probably got a pretty good idea of which America’s sweethearts we’re talking about.

Photo found on Pinterest
Jennifer Lawrence! Of course. How could it take us this long to finally feature everyone’s favorite? And she is definitely everyone’s favorite! Has anyone ever said they didn’t like Jennifer? Nope. It’s impossible not to love her like a BFF! She’s so well liked and relatable because she is 100% authentic. We’re so used to celebrities being these objects of wonder and perfection. They become people who aren’t quite real.

We are loving Jennifer Lawrence because she just doesn’t care about pretending. She’s not afraid to talk about pizza or how star struck she is when she meets stars like Meryl Streep. She shows confidence in herself enough that she doesn’t have to change herself to meet Hollywood’s standards.
“In Hollywood, I’m obese. I’m considered a fat actress. I eat like a caveman. I’ll be the only actress who doesn’t have anorexia rumours! I’m never going to starve myself for a part. I’m invincible. I don’t want little girls to be like ‘Oh, I want to look like Katniss, so I’m going to skip dinner!’” - Jennifer Lawrence on her weight
We love her because we know she’s just like us! It’s not a common thing to see a celebrity and think of them as a normal person. Thank you Jennifer! Who couldn’t love America’s sweetheart?

DIY Glitter Flower Cupcake Toppers

Happy Friday!

To celebrate the second day of spring and the beginning of the weekend, we decided to get cupcakes... err I mean we decided to make glitter toppers! ;)

We're sure you've seen adorable glitter cake and cupcake toppers on Pinterest, like these:

Found on Pinterest

However, we wanted to add our own Glitties spin on an easy, cheap, and super cute glitter craft! We decided to go with a fresh spring theme and make Spring Flower Glitter Cake Toppers.

Here are the materials we used:
  • Extra Heavy Cardstock (Cut-out in desired shape)
  • Extra Fine Glitter Powders (Coral, Sunset, Frostbite
  • Skewers (cut to preferred length)
  • Glue Dots (Pop Up size)
  • Mod Podge & Brush
  • Delicious Mini-Cake from The Chocolate
Instructions:

1. Coat the flower shaped cardstock with a thin layer of Mod Podge.
2. Sprinkle glitter over wet Mod Podge, shake off excess. Allow to dry.
3. Add up to three additional coats depending on the size of glitter you are using. If you use extra fine glitter like we used, it will take numerous coats to get the rich color you get in the jar. If you use a thicker glitter, it will take you fewer coats.
4. Once dry to the touch, shake of any loose glitter and place a glue dot in the center of the flower shape. Place the skewer on the glue dot and add a second glue dot on top of it.
5. Press the yellow flower center piece on top of the second glue dot, and press together firmly.
6. Stick your adorable glitter toppers into cupcakes, cakes, flower pots, where you want them! Enjoy!

What glitter craft would you like to see us tackle next? Share any ideas!

Emma Watson, The "It" Girl

Photo found on Tumblr

We’ve been very selective when choosing who to promote as our Woman Crush Wednesday. We want only the strongest, most confident, and most relatable women to make the cut. Who would you want to go hang out with and call your BFF? We thought about this and came up with a great candidate, Emma Watson!

Photo found on Tumblr
Emma Watson is one of those actresses who is so real and genuine, it’s easy to feel like you already know her! She’s the kind of woman in the spotlight that everyone loves to love. We’ve watched her grow up from the beginning of the Harry Potter series as a little kid to a full grown adult. And while it’s easy to go from cute kid star to a young adult falling into a world with no values, Emma has completely avoided that phase.

In a world where showing more skin is not only acceptable, but encouraged, Emma isn’t afraid to remind us that sometimes modesty pays off.

“I find the whole concept of being ‘sexy’ embarrassing and confusing. If I do an interview with photographs people desperately want to change me - dye my hair blonder, pluck my eyebrows, give me a fringe. Then there’s the choice of clothes. I know everyone wants a picture of me in a mini-skirt. But that’s not me. I feel uncomfortable. I’d never go out in a mini-skirt. It’s nothing to do with protecting the Hermione image. I wouldn’t do that. Personally, I don’t actually think it’s even that sexy. What’s sexy about saying, ‘I’m here with  my boobs out and a short skirt, have a look at everything I’ve got?’ My idea of sexy is that less is more. The less you reveal the more people can wonder.”

We are loving Emma Watson this week because of her great talent and exceptional courage to be who she is in a world where you’re always being watched. From her chic fashion sense to her charming sense of humor, she’s definitely an “It” girl!

What do you think of Emma Watson? Who is your Woman Crush this Wednesday?

2014 Spring Glitter Collection

Spring Glitter Collection
I don't know about you, but here at Glitties we are done with this whole "winter" thing. We're excited to run with our new 2014 Spring Glitter collection, and we aren't looking back!

The new spring glitter collection was inspired by Pantone's Spring 2014 Fashion Guide. These glitters are each .008" fine glitter powders perfect for nail art, glitter crafts, anything you need them for. Each of these glitter colors capture a different mood and feeling for spring! Which one best describes your style for this spring?!

Blazing Blue Glitter

Blazing Blue is a shimmery iridescent fine glitter that will pick up the green, yellow, and pink undertones in your outfit. This pastel is the perfect subtle compliment to any spring look or project!

Brilliant Lilac

Brilliant Lilac is a gorgeous purple glitter with ashy metallic undertones. This glitter goes perfectly with nail stud embellishments, your studded handbag, and that sassy attitude!

Sea Breeze

Sea Breeze will remind you of that perfect trip to the beach you're going to have this summer. This shimmery iridescent green glitter is going to complement the warm undertones in your skin, flowery spring dress, or Easter craft project!

Slate

Slate is a fiercely metallic glitter that you're going to love. As a neutral it goes with any and all other colors in your wardrobe. Use Slate with gel polish for a long lasting and fabulous manicure.

Sahara

Sahara might just be our favorite glitter of this collection! Sahara is an incredible metallic - it isn't just gold, it's this brilliant mix of yellow, platinum, tan, and almost a little bit of rose gold that just POPS! You're going to love it!

Unmellow Yellow

Unmellow Yellow lives up to it's name. It has this electric quality to it, but it's still a pretty pastel glitter. The iridescent shimmer makes this a gorgeous accent in any set of nail art or craft project!

Cayenne

Cayenne also lives up to it's name; it's a spicy iridescent mix of orange, red, and yellow glitters. It's feisty, but it's also subtle and adds an extra 'umph' where it's needed.

Orange Fizz

Orange Fizz will definitely quench your thirst for bright, summery, eye-catching glitter (just don't try to drink it). As another one of our beautiful iridescent glitter powders it will complement the other warm colors around you.

Sweet Lavender

Sweet Lavender might just be the perfect metallic lavender color in existence. It's silvery undertones make this light purple glitter pop and come to life. Even though it is indeed sweet, it will steal the spotlight!

Cobalt Blue
Cobalt Blue is a rich deep sea kind of experience. The intensity of this incredible blue glitter is the equivalent of velvet for fabrics. This metallic blue glitter has an amazing depth to it, and it's perfect for that bold statement you've been wanting to make.

Which glitter color is your favorite? Which one represents your personality, your style, the thing that makes you unique?!
